What makes him so successful?
Like all successful athletes of Antonio Brown’s caliber, he is an extreme competitor. He was known by his coaches and his teammates as a player with a very high work rate. He pushed his training to the next level all the time. Brown would never let his detractors get him down. He always pushed through adversity and the noise in order to be the most successful player possible. This was seen when he wasn’t highly recruited out of high school. He made the most of his time at Central Michigan. When he wasn’t highly touted going into the NFL draft, he pushed through adversity and exploded onto the scene in just his second year in the league. At every turn, Antonio Brown took the situation as it came to him and made the most of it.
On the field, he was fast and explosive. He had great hands, rarely dropped a pass, and always seemed to be open. Using a scheme in Pittsburgh of short passes, screen passes, and open lanes on the outside, he turned his small size and high speed into yards and touchdowns. He was hard to cover due to his slippery nature at the line of scrimmage. He had a nose for the ball like no other and was a trusted safety net for Ben Roethlisberger. His highlights and production dominated the news cycle for many years and in 2020 he was awarded a place on the NFL All-Decade team for 2010-2019.
How did Antonio Brown get so rich?
After a lackluster rookie season, Brown wasted no time in racing towards stardom. His second season he caught over 1,100 yards on 69 receptions in a breakout sophomore effort. Over his first four seasons, he caught over 3,000 yards and 15 touchdowns where he began to prove that he was a reliable player that was capable up putting up consistent numbers. As a sixth-round pick, Brown’s first contract was for three years and only $1.28 million. After his breakout seasons following his rookie campaign, the Steelers offered him a new contract which was more on par with his talent level.
In 2012 Brown signed a 5-year contract worth $42 million which carried an annual salary of $8.3 million dollars. This was a much more lucrative deal and he was nearly nine million dollars upfront in the form of a hefty signing bonus. But Antonio Brown was not done there.
Following his new deal, his production on the field absolutely exploded. In 2013 Brown caught 1,499 yards and 8 touchdowns. The following season he upped that even further to 1,698 yards and a whopping 13 touchdowns. Every season his numbers kept on ballooning. At this point, he was a regular feature on the highlight reels being played all over America. His transition from productive receiver to superstar was in full swing.

Why is he so famous?
Despite being a household name today, Antonio Brown came from relative obscurity. He attended high school at Miami Norland in Miami Gardens, Florida. He did not receive much attention from big named schools coming out of high school and he ended up playing football at the University of Central Michigan. He played three productive seasons for the mid-level school. His stats were good but not earth shattering. He racked up 3,199 receiving yards and 22 touchdowns in three seasons with the Chippewas. Those numbers came on a school record 305 receptions. Each of his three seasons on the field set a school record for receptions in a season and he finished averaging over 100 receptions per year.
Despite a successful college career, Antonio Brown was not highly touted coming out of college. Similarly to his transition from high school to college, it looked as though he was going to be underrated once more. According to one pre-draft scouting report, shared by Brown himself on his Twitter account, said that he was too small, too raw, and lacked “functional strength”. The negative scouting translated to draft position as Antonio Brown was not drafted until the 6th round by the Pittsburg Steelers. Luckily for the Steelers, Antonio Brown would quickly outpace his draft position on his way to stardom.
Antonio Brown made his money as a football player, by continually beating the odds and stringing together an improbably ten year career in the NFL that saw him light up the scoreboard and fill his bank account. However, off field issues began to plague his career towards the end. He had unprofessional run-ins with coaches and teammates and confrontations with police which ultimately ended up with him being out of a job. He is currently still listed as a free agent while he continues to work out. No matter what happens with Antonio Brown’s career going forward, nothing can take away the accolades, fame, success, and money that he made as a wildly successful wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
