Britney Spears Career

“Chaotic” is one word that comes to mind when you reflect on Britney Spears’ professional and personal life. So it seems apt that she chose it as the title for the bizarre, self-made reality television show she starred in with then-husband Kevin Federline in 2005. It was one of many strange things she did on the road to the full-on mental break she suffered in January of 2008. But looking back on her turbulent career, you can’t really blame Brit for succumbing to all that pressure.

Britney Jean Spears is the second child of Lynne Irene and Jamie Spears, and they almost immediately started training her to become a star. She began taking dance lessons at the age of three, and auditioned for The Mickey Mouse Club when she was eight, only to be shot down for being too young. But it wasn’t long before she made her way onto the show. In December 1992, she was cast as a Mousketeer alongside future boyfriend Justin Timberlake and rumored nemesis Christina Aguilera.

But it wasn’t until 1997 that her career started to really take shape. She landed a deal with Jive Records and got the green light to record a full-length solo album. Her debut, …Baby One More Time, was unleashed to the world in January 1999, and immediately catapulted to the top of the charts, scoring her an AMA for Favorite Pop/Rock New Artist, a Best New Artist Grammy nomination and three Teen Choice Awards for Choice Female Artist, Choice Female Artist and Single of the Year (‘…Baby One More Time’).

With the abrupt success came the onslaught of controversy. Everything from her stance against premarital sex to a racy cover shoot for Rolling Stone came under fire, and she became the butt of every late-night comedian’s jokes. But Britney took the criticism in stride, even poking fun at it herself with her second album, Oops!… I Did It Again, in 2000. While performing the title track at the 2000 MTV VMAs, Spears ripped off her black suit to reveal a sparkly bra and skin-tight, nude bodysuit and gyrated around the stage bolstering her paradoxical image of both a sex symbol and a beacon of Christian morality.

During that time, Spears finally confirmed rumors that she was dating her Mickey Mouse Club co-star Justin Timberlake. The two were engaged in a high-profile relationship for three years before they split. Timberlake fed the rumor frenzy when the video for his single ‘Cry Me a River’ featured him getting revenge on an actress who looked suspiciously similar to Britney. She responded with the ballad ‘Everytime,’ which only made the public assume that she was at fault for the breakup. It didn’t help when Justin took a pot-shot at her and shattered any semblance of a wholesome image for good, revealing, “She lost her virginity a while ago — and I should know.”

With her third and fourth albums — Britney and In the Zone — her unstoppable momentum continued and brought with it her first, and only, Grammy win for Best Dance Recording (‘Toxic’) and another notorious VMA performance in 2003. This time, she sang ‘Like a Virgin’ with Christina Aguilera before Madonna joined them onstage and shared a girl-on-girl kiss with each of them.

But things soon started to take a turn for the worse. On January 3, 2004, Britney made headlines when she eloped with her childhood friend Jason Alexander in Las Vegas. The marriage was quickly annulled, but her unpredictable behavior started to raise flags. Later that year, she had to cancel her Onyx Hotel Tour when she had to have surgery on an injured knee. And in July, she suddenly announced that she was engaged to her backup dancer boyfriend of only three months, Kevin Federline. They made it official in September, and she quickly became pregnant with their first child. On September 14, 2005, she gave birth to their son, Sean Preston. She had another baby boy with Federline, Jayden James, on September 12, 2006, before she filed for divorce on November 7.

She only spiraled further following the divorce, and her erratic behavior meant that a team of paparazzi followed her every move 24 hours a day, waiting to see what she would do next. And Britney didn’t disappoint — she shaved her head, attacked a pap’s car with an umbrella, began speaking with a bizarre British affectation, checked into and out of rehab, made an ill-conceived attempt at a VMA comeback performance, started dating Adnan Ghalib, a paparazzo who was stalking her, and ultimately lost custody of her children to the lesser evil that was Federline. Somewhere in between, she managed to release her fifth album, Blackout, which was both critically and commercially successful, but it did nothing for the mess her personal life had become. Her breakdown was complete on January 3, 2008, when she locked herself into her home with her kids and had to be put under involuntary psychiatric hold.

When a judge awarded her father a conservatorship over her, it was the beginning of a real turnaround for the fallen star. Since he took over her affairs, Britney has released a successful sixth album, Circus, in 2008, went on a comeback tour, which became the fifth most profitable of 2009, and began a (healthy) relationship with her former agent, Jason Trawick.

For a while, it seemed like Spears’ star had burned out — some who enjoyed poking fun at her were even rooting for her to fail — but she managed claw her way back to the top.

In 2020, Britney Spears has a ballpark net worth of about $60 million dollars.
