Who Is Chevy Chase
Cornelius Crane Chase, more commonly known as Chevy Chase was born in Manhattan, New York on October 8th 1943. He grew up in Woodstock, New York, with an upper middle class lifestyle. His father, being a Princeton-educated editor and his mother a concert pianist, they were a prominent family in New York at the time.
Nicknamed Chevy by his grandmother, the name came from an old English ballad, called the ‘Ballad of Chevy Chase’ and the name stuck with him into adulthood.
His early life was not an easy time. His parents divorced when he was just four years old and his mother and step-father allegedly subjected him to emotional and physical abuse.
In his school days, Chevy was known by his classmates for being a practical joker and for having a somewhat absurd sense of humor. Allegedly, he was even expelled for keeping a cow in his dorm room, although some think this is more urban myth than fact! After college, where he studied pre-med and later a B.A. in English, he tried his hand at a variety of jobs such as driving cabs and trucks, waiting tables, sales and construction to name a few. However, his interest in the world of comedy led to him making it a career of it.
American actor Chevy Chase has a net worth upwards of $50 million dollars, as of 2020.
How Did Chevy Chase Get So Rich?
The move to Hollywood acting proved to be a very wise decision for Chevy. At the height of his career in the mid 80s, he was bringing in around $7 million per movie. Given that he starred in sixteen movies in the 80s, it’s fair to say the move paid off!
Chase’s acting career did begin a downward spiral in the early 90s however. His movies, although widely anticipated were, by and large, box office flops. Things didn’t ever really improve much for him in the movie business after that except perhaps with Man of the House in 1995, which was relatively successful.
He tried to turn his hand to being a talk-show host with The Chevy Chase Show on Fox. Unfortunately, however, ratings were low and Fox made the decision to cancel the show after only five weeks.
Aside from some small TV roles, Chevy didn’t really have much of a further breakthrough on his acting career until Community in 2009. He starred in the show for four seasons.
His net worth is currently sitting at around $50 million.
Why Is He So Famous?
His first professional comedy role was as a writer and cast member of the National Lampoon Radio Hour alongside Bill Murray and John Belushi.
He was then hired as a writer and became one of the original cast members of Saturday Night Live and it was during this show that he became known for his physical comedy, making memorable slips and falls part of his skits. Saturday Night Live really launched his career and his fame because he received two Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe for his writing and acting on the show. He decided to leave the show during only it’s second season and break into the world of movie acting.
Chase made the move out to Los Angeles and married and started to follow his acting career. He landed big roles in movies such as Foul Play and Caddyshack. His acting career went from strength to strength quickly, landing roles in very successful movies, such as National Lampoon’s Vacation, Fletch and Spies Like Us, in which he starred alongside Steve Martin.
What Makes Him So Successful?
It was Chase’s penchant for humor and his ability to deliver it in both his writing and acting that made the 70s and 80s a hugely successful period in his life. As well as winning the acclaimed Emmy and Golden Globe Awards, he was honored with a coveted star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1992.
He made the move to Hollywood at the right time and took on the right roles that made him a very successful and well-known comedy actor for much of the 1980s.
Chevy’s career has certainly been full of its up and downs but the 70s and 80s were definitely his golden era.
It has been said that he can be a very difficult man to work with, which possibly attributed to downward spiral in his career. He has had lots of personal issues to overcome along the way too with divorces, depression and addiction issues.
In stark contrast to his comedic roles, Chase has caused much controversy with racial, misogynistic and sexist comments and has been described as a cantankerous, mean and rude man to work with by various co-stars. He has received much backlash in recent years for his behavior with many stories from years gone by trickling down.
He doesn’t seem to have done his career any favors by seeming to develop volatile relationships behind the scenes.
Whatever about his off-screen persona however, it can’t be denied that Chevy Chase made America fall in love with him on-screen. In his most famous roles in the National Lampoon series of films, Caddyshack and Fletch, among others, he brought many a smile and laugh to the faces of his millions of viewers and fans.
In his later years, in interviews, Chase has admitted that he may perhaps have become quite arrogant and difficult. He attributed this to his quick rise to fame and admits he probably wasn’t ready for it, nor did he handle it well. Problems in his personal life didn’t help things much either with two marriages ending in divorce after just a few years. His addiction issues arose from taking pain medication for a bad back; he puts down to his comedy skits. He went to the Betty Ford Clinic to seek treatment for his addiction however and this aspect of his life did improve. He did, however, seek treatment for alcoholism in 2016.
Throughout his acting career, he appeared in 51 movies as well as various TV shows and of course his early work in Saturday Night Live and his brief stint as a talk show host.
