Who Is Colin Firth

Colin Firth is British. Which is to say that he is British. British good looks, British charm, and with a gift for characters with a very British reserve, Firth has been an A-list star across the Atlantic for more than 15 years. Whether in blockbusters or BBC period pieces, one suspects that wherever he is—professionally, geographically, or otherwise—it is exactly where he wants to be.

Colin Firth has a net worth of $25 million dollars, as of 2020.

Finding Hamlet

Colin Andrew Firth was born in England, but lived with his parents in Nigeria until he was three. Three of his four grandparents were Methodist missionaries and Firth’s parents, both educators, were teaching abroad. The Firths moved around a great deal, including a year in St. Louis in 1972, where the 12-year-old Colin would feel the inner seeds of rebellion. As a nerdy English teenager from a middle-class academic family, Firth longed to assert his own identity.

Back in England, he coasted through the rest of compulsory schooling—“I was rather a passive, hippie type,” he claims—having already decided to abandon academia and follow a career in acting. He moved to London in 1978 and joined the National Youth Theatre, but had difficulty moving up the ranks. He persevered, ultimately landing job in the wardrobe department of the National Theatre, but again, the meaty, dramatic character roles eluded him. So he went back to school. He attended the prestigious Drama Centre London from 1980 to 1983, a school he chose because of it’s difficult reputation. “I can be very lazy and complacent unless I’m pushed,” he says, “so I knew I’d be weeded out very quickly if I was making a mistake.”

It became clear very quickly that acting, for Firth, was not a mistake. His education revealed a gifted actor that had previously only lacked training, and at the Drama Centre he would take the lead in King Lear and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Because of him, the school staged a performance of Hamlet for the first time in its 37-year history. “You can’t do five Hamlets a year,” said school founder Yat Malmgren, “you’ve got to wait until you find your Hamlet. We found ours in Colin.”

The High Road

Firth’s reputation preceded him, and shot out of school to a career that hasn’t stopped since. Already very active in the theater, Firth got his big screen debut after he impressed Rupert Everett enough to cast him in 1984’s Another Country. He was talented and handsome, but continually shied away from star-making Hollywood parts. His first big role was in Milos Forman’s Valmont, but he turned down subsequent Hollywood meetings, he would say later, out of “snobbery and fear.”

On Valmont he met and began a relationship with Meg Tilly. The two would have a son in 1990 and live in Canada for two years, Firth’s longest period of relative inactivity before or since. After the two split, he left Canada, returning to the stage and screen for the small, demanding roles that interested him. He eventually remarried to his current wife, producer Livia Giuggioli, in 1997.

Romancing The Screen

In 1995, he decided to go a little mainstream as Mr. Darcy for the BBC production of Pride and Prejudice. It was an explosive hit in the UK, turning Firth into a national heartthrob. Again, he evaded fame, settling back to complex character studies like the reserved and tormented husband in The English Patient. Then another series of small, fascinating roles, then Shakespeare in Love. Then a half-dozen leading roles, then Bridget Jones’s Diary. And another half-dozen roles before Love, Actually.

Firth has finally become a star on both sides of the Atlantic, but he has never compromised his principles, his thirst for new challenges and fascinating characters. His best known films in America—What a Girl Wants, Bridget Jones, Mamma Mia!—are mere tent-posts for a long and enviable career. Finally winning the notice of Hollywood for 2009’s A Single Man and 2010’s The King’s Speech with back-to-back Oscar nominations, Colin Firth has achieved a rare feat: he is a star of his own making.
