Who Is Drew Barrymore

She’s been a Hollywood staple since the ‘80s who is just as famous as she is infamous. But this rebel child turned good girl is a breath of fresh air in an industry of Prada and plastic. Drew Barrymore has given hope to a generation of burnt out former child stars that there is life after drugs and B-level thrillers. But, then again, not many of them can count Steven Spielberg as their godfather.

We calculate Drew Barrymore’s net worth is in excess of $130 million dollars, as of 2020.

Extra-Terrestrial Talent

Born into a long line of Hollywood family royalty, she got her first break in an ‘out of this world’ flick alongside a friendly alien. The then-seven-year-old Drew played Gertie in Spielberg’s groundbreaking film E.T. From that moment on her fate in Hollywood land was sealed. Two years later, she starred in the film Irreconcilable Differences as a young girl trying to divorce her deadbeat parents—the role landed her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Teenage Rebellion

But with sudden and young success came more than a little temptation. When she was just a child, her mother started taking her to clubs like the notorious Studio 54. Drew admitted to smoking cigarettes, drinking and experimenting with marijuana and cocaine all before even becoming a teenager. At the age of 13, she was admitted into rehab. At 14 she attempted suicide and landed herself back in rehab for a short stint before writing her memoir, Lost Little Girl, as a 16-year-old. In a bizarre turn of life imitating art, she filed for emancipation from her parents the following year.

Shedding Her Clothes And Her Image

Her wild child reputation started to put a damper on her once promising career, and in the early ‘90s she starred in B-level and made for TV movies like Poison Ivy, Guncrazy and Doppelganger. Although she received a second Golden Globe nomination for her work in Guncrazy, things didn’t start to look up for the young starlet until the mid-‘90s.

In 1995, she posed nude for Playboy, much to the dismay of her godfather Spielberg. On her 21st birthday, he sent her a blanket with a note reading, “Cover yourself up!” He also included a copy of the offending magazine with her photos digitally altered to look like she was wearing clothes. That was the official end of “Bad Drew.” She started to take on more PG roles like Everyone Says I Love You with Edward Norton, who she also dated, The Wedding Singer, Ever After and Home Fries with a break to shoot a very memorable cameo in the slasher Scream. No stranger to her own star power, Drew formed her own production company in 1995, Flower Films. Her company went on to produce films like Never Been Kissed, Charlie’s Angels, 50 First Dates, Fever Pitch and He’s Just Not That into You.

In the new millennium, she cemented her Hollywood status with a string of successful romantic comedies. A segue into a dramatic role in the HBO film Grey Gardens in 2009 earned her a Golden Globe for her Best Actress. That year, with actor and producer already under her belt, she added director to the mix with her film Whip It.

Easy, Breezy, Beautiful

Drew’s acting career has not been without its far share of steamy affairs including several lesbian encounters during her more reckless days. Drew, who was notorious for her impulsive approach to romance, was engaged four times and married twice. Her impromptu wedding to British bartender Jeremy Thomas was short-lived, to say the least, barely making it past the one-month mark. In 2001, she surprised fans when she married actor and comedian Tom Green. They divorced a year later.

After her second divorce, she started dating The Strokes drummer Fabrizio Moretti. Their relationship lasted five years, but ended in an amicable break-up in the beginning of 2007.  That year, while filming He’s Just Not That Into You, she met actor Justin Long and they have been in an on-and-off rumored relationship ever since.

Along the way, she’s also found time to be the face of Gucci and CoverGirl, host SNL five times and be named one of the top paid leading ladies in Hollywood. It’s been a rocky road for the actress who was born into her career and almost crashed and burned, but even though her career is out of this world, she’s the actress we’d most like to call BFF.

Defining Quote “It wasn’t my choice to be an open book, but when people found out what my life was like when I was 14 or 15, I didn’t deny it. I think the more imperfect you are, the more human you are.”
