He is credited with breaking the racial barrier of rap and hip-hop music as he excelled in what was an industry largely dominated by African Americans. Through this, he has achieved stellar levels of commercial success across the globe, gathering a tremendous fortune throughout his career.

After he released The Slim Shady LP and it became a global success, he established his own record label with his manager Paul Rosenberg. Founded in 1999, his label, called Shady Records, has signed many acts. Eminem even discovered 50 Cent, who is also considered to be one of the most famous rappers of all time.

Eminem also pursued an acting career, starring in movies such as 8 Mile, which he recorded songs for the soundtrack of, and making an appearance in the 2014 film The Interview.

Battling At 14

Growing up in different cities all over Missouri before settling in a suburb of Detroit, Michigan when he was 12, no one knew Marshall Bruce Mathers III would grow up to record several multi-platinum albums, win Grammys and even an Oscar, and shock the world by performing a live duet with Elton John. He came from very humble beginnings being raised by a poor single mother after his father ran out on the family when he was two.

He started performing and competing in amateur rap battles when he was 14. During that time, he rarely went to school and failed most of his classes before dropping out at 17 when he found out he had to repeat the ninth grade for the third time. Soon after, Eminem’s uncle Ronnie, who had played a significant role in raising him, committed suicide—an event that had a profound effect on the star.

Why is Eminem so famous?

Eminem’s home life was unstable from a young age. His mother raised him by herself, and they moved around a lot. They moved between Missouri and Michigan and were often forced to live with family members. Despite fights with his mother and a rocky school career, Eminem continued down his path to become one of the most successful rappers of all time.

Eminem began rapping when he was 14 years old with one of his high school friends. He took the name “M&M.” This stood for his initials, and eventually evolved into “Eminem,” the name we know him as today. He would sneak into a nearby high school with another friend and fellow rapper for freestyle rap battles in the lunchroom. Eminem would also attend open mic contests at what was considered ground zero for the rap scene in Detroit, the Hip Hop Shop on West 7 Mile.

Eminem’s early rapping career was rocky and littered with hardships and failure. His debut studio album was called Infinite, and was a complete failure. It lacked the dark and violent twist that he would later be known for as he rapped about the difficulties of raising his newborn daughter. DJs and radio stations ignored Infinite for the most part and the feedback he received was condescending and unhelpful.

However, things looked up after he developed his sadistic and violent alter ego, which he called “Slim Shady.” Slim Shady, as well as his new dark and rough sound, were both largely present in his new music. He developed a new EP, called The Slim Shady EP, which made it into the hands of the CEO of Interscope Records. The CEO, Jimmy Iovine, played the record for producer Dr. Dre, who was hugely impressed by Eminem’s talent.

Eminem worked with Dr Dre, one of his lifelong idols, to develop a new album, and he released The Slim Shady LP in February of 1999. He rapped about drugs, sexual acts, violence, and mental instability as well as more serious issues such as poverty, familial struggles, and marital difficulties. This album launched Eminem into mainstream success and fame and became certified triple platinum by the end of the year. It was one of the most popular albums of the year.

8 Miles From Home

Fuelled by the controversy, Eminem’s career continued to rise. In 2002, he starred in his first and only feature film 8 Mile, loosely based on his life growing up in Detroit. His performance was highly regarded and his single for the film’s soundtrack “Lose Yourself” became a megahit and won an Oscar for Best Original Song. He refused to attend the ceremony to accept his award.

His next two albums, The Eminem Show and Encore, met the same success until he suddenly slunk away from the spotlight in 2005 after he cancelled the European leg of his Anger Management tour to enter rehab. The public didn’t hear anything from the outspoken rapper for almost three years until he reentered the spotlight with an autobiography The Way I Am in October 2008. In it, he detailed his turbulent life, career and his struggle with prescription drug addiction. He made a full comeback in 2009 with his album Relapse, which failed to duplicate the success of his past releases, but was well-received and put him back on the radar.

ver since Eminem first introduced himself to the world with “My Name is”, his personal issues, legal woes and big mouth have put his music on the backburner. It was hard to focus on his talent when he was talking openly about killing his on-again, off-again wife, getting arrested for pistol-whipping her alleged lover, parodying Michael Jackson, engaging in a feud with Mariah Carey, getting sued by his mother and the plethora of other nonsense that clouded his career. But on his return, he’s showing the world he’s grown up, kicked some demons to the curb and this time the only thing he’s high on now is music.

What makes Eminem so successful?

Eminem’s aggressive flow and brash, angry style set him apart from many other artists in the music industry. While other rappers rap in a similar style, his political incorrectness and transgressive lyrics also help to set him apart from other artists. His skills in record producing allowed him to found his own record label, Shady Records, which also contributes to his commercial success. It is safe to say that Eminem’s success can be attributed to his individuality and immense skills in rapping and producing, which have made him one of the richest and internationally renowned rappers in the world.

Through his original and distinctive musical style and exceptional skill in rapping and music production, Eminem has become incredibly wealthy and globally known. He is one of the most successful rappers, as well as one of the most commercially successful artists in music history. He continues to produce music, and will likely continue building upon his reputation as one of the best rappers of all time.

Summing-Up

Despite some of Eminem’s violent and controversial lyrics, he was launched into fame by The Slim Shady LP. To this day his intense rapid fire rap style and overall talent in rapping, songwriting, and producing has made him a hugely influential figure within the music community, and one of the best known rappers of all time.
