Who Is Emmy Rossum

Actress and singer Emmy Rossum is an emerging Hollywood starlet who used her powerful vocal chords to pummel her way onto the big screen. Having performed in over 20 operas before the age of 18, Rossum is a natural virtuoso who’s taken to acting, seizing every opportunity, some very daring, that comes her way.

American actress Emmy Rossum has a personal net worth of $12 million dollars, as of 2020.

Opera Star (Soap And Otherwise)

Born on Emmanuelle Grey Rossum, she was raised by her single mother in New York City. After showing early signs of musical talent, Emmy joined the Metropolitan Opera’s Children’s Chorus at age seven. The vocal training she received allowed her to grow her sweet soprano voice while developing her onstage presence in a series of productions. Over the years that followed, she appeared in a number of operas alongside some of the world’s most renowned opera singers.

Going from opera to soap opera, Rossum made her television debut when she landed a recurring role as one of the many faces on the long-running soap opera As the World Turns. Her telegenic looks helped Rossum break free from the sea of obscure soap opera stars and move up the show biz ladder onto TV movies such as Genius (1999) and The Audrey Hepburn Story (2000).

From Stage To Screen

Eventually, Rossum got her big screen break with the country-musical Songcatcher (2000), for which she got a chance to sing a duet with the legendary singer Dolly Parton on the film’s soundtrack. Rossum continued to work, finding parts in lesser known movies until she was cast as the ill-fated daughter of Sean Penn’s character in the movie Mystic River (2003). Her brief but memorable role in the movie didn’t go unnoticed as The New York Times named Rossum as one of the Six Actors to Watch this Fall (and Long Thereafter) in 2003.

Continuing down the red carpet path, Rossum played Jake Gyllenhaal’s love interest in the natural disaster blockbuster The Day After Tomorrow in 2004. Though her role in the high-budget disaster flick, Rossum gained the attention of curious audiences who had yet to see her fresh face. Her stunning soprano abilities were showcased on the big screen after she won the leading female role in first film production of The Phantom of the Opera that same year. Although the movie didn’t fare well with critics, it earned Rossum a Golden Globe nomination.

Pop Aspirations

While continuing to build her career as an actress, Rossum attempted to take her musical talents in a different direction, recording her first album, Inside Out, a dreamy-pop venture that experienced mild success in the United States. Upon reflection of her album, Rossum stated, “This album is about figuring out who I am. It’s the real Emmy Rossum. For the first time, I’m not speaking someone else’s lines. I feel the most open and able to express myself in a song. It’s scary because it’s all me.” But personal expression wasn’t the only thing Emmy got out of the music industry.

In February 2008, Rossum secretly married music executive Justin Siegel, but after a year and a half, Siegel filed for divorce and the couple split. Soon after, Rossum began openly dating Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz, but the two went their separate ways in 2010.

She went on to marry American film and television producer, director, and screenwriter, Sam Esmail, in 2017.

Shameless

After starring in a series of average films, Rossum joined William H. Macy in Showtime’s drama Shameless about a dysfunctional family living in the slums of Chicago. The cable show, which premiered in January 2011, provided her with a new outlet for her untapped talents and gave viewers a glimpse of her naughty side.

As accomplished as she already is, Emmy Rossum is still a budding young actress trying to find her foothold in the industry. Although her musical talents trump her acting abilities, her eager beaver attitude just might drive her onto Hollywood’s A-list.

Defining Quote “As an actor, you always look for things that will stretch you and that are different than you are, so that you can surprise yourself, and you want to surround yourself with the highest caliber of people that will make you look good.”
