Who Is Eva Longoria
When Desperate Housewives first debuted in the fall of 2004, the gorgeous Eva Longoria was the youngest and least known of the soon-to-be hit’s four main stars. It wasn’t long, however, before the sassy and sexy Latina’s fame was overshadowing that of her other castmates, and soon she was gracing the covers of not only gossip rags, but fashion mags, as well.
American actress Eva Longoria has a net worth of $85 million dollars, as of 2020.
The Texas Spitfire
Longoria’s Texas roots run deep. She was born in Corpus Christi in 1975 where she grew up a self-professed “ugly duckling” who garnered the nickname “la prieta fea” (the dark ugly one) from her siblings. She went on to graduate from Texas A&M University-Kingsville, where she appeared in a few stage productions. In 1998, Longoria was crowned Miss Corpus Christi USA and also won a chance to appear in a talent show in Los Angeles, which she won.
Longoria decided to stay in Los Angeles and hired an agent, landing her first television gig in 2000 when she appeared in an episode of Beverly Hills, 90210. Two guest roles on daytime soap operas, The Bold and the Beautiful and General Hospital, soon followed before she landed a recurring role as a former call girl, Isabella Brana, on The Young and the Restless.
Longoria stayed on the show for two years before leaving it in 2003 to a play a detective on the primetime drama L.A. Dragnet. Unfortunately, the show, which was in its sophomore year, was cancelled after she only had the chance to appear in 10 episodes.
The Hottest Housewife On The Block
In 2004 Longoria auditioned for, and won, the role of Desperate Housewives’ Gabrielle Solis, a sexy housewife having a steamy affair with a young, and often shirtless, gardener played by Jesse Metcalfe. The show turned out to be a hit and Longoria was suddenly a household name and a sought-after celebrity. It was a good year for the Texan—she also meet her future husband, 22-year-old San Antonio Spurs basketball player, Tony Parker. The only dark cloud for Longoria in 2004 occurred when Carlita’s Secret, a film she co-produced and directed, went straight to video.
By 2005, the Housewives stars—Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross and Longoria, in particular—seemed to be everywhere, gracing the covers of magazines and appearing on multiple television morning and talk shows. In addition, Longoria was hired by L’Oreal Paris to be its spokeswoman.
Diva Vs. Diva
Unfortunately, relationships between the actresses on the set were rumored to be deteriorating, and an article in the May 2005 Vanity Fair spoke of major strife, one-upmanship and general cattiness that occurred during a cover shoot the women did for the magazine. In July of 2005, Desperate Housewives earned 15 Emmy nominations, including three Best Comedy Series Actress nods for Cross, Hatcher, and eventual winner Huffman but no acknowledgment for Longoria’s work.
Like most television actresses, Longoria has tried to make the leap to the big screen. In 2006, she starred in The Sentinel with Kiefer Sutherland and Michael Douglas and also appeared in Harsh Times, which co-starred Christian Bale. In 2007, she starred in Over her Dead Body and Lower Learning. Unfortunately, none of her films have provided her with a big box office hit yet.
Although Emmys and big screen hits have so far eluded Longoria, she has been showered with many other awards. In 2005 and 2006, she was number one on Maxim‘s Hot 100 list. In 2006, People en Espanol Magazine named her as one of its100 Most Influential Hispanics, and she also won Person of the Year at the ALMA (American Latino Media Arts Award) Awards. In 2007, she won the Favorite Female TV Star at the People’s Choice Awards. One of Longoria’s more odd “honors” was a 75-foot by 110-foot magazine cover featuring the actress. The gigantic commemoration for Maxim‘s 100th issue was set out in the desert and visible to passing planes and supposedly even satellites.
In 2007, Longoria married her longtime beau, Parker, in Paris. Her Housewives co-stars Hatcher and Huffman were among the guests that attended. But after three years of wedded bliss and talk of starting a family, rumors that Tony was being unfaithful began to emerge. Although never confirmed, in November 2010, Eva officially filed for divorce from Parker.
But this sexy Latina has plenty of projects to keep her mind off her heartbreak. Eva continues to act, she opened her own restaurant, Beso, in Las Vegas, and she launched Eva’s Heroes, a charity for disabled children, in 2006.
Defining Quote “I find it a turnoff whenever men aren’t into some kind of sport. And, no, video games don’t count. I dated a guy who was into video games, and I wanted to shoot myself.”
