Who Is Jason Segel

With a knack for the art behind the acting, funnyman Jason Segel has become much more than a jokester. Over the course of his career, Segel took his talent for bawdy comedy and parlayed it into a successful film career and some high profile writing gigs.

American actor Jason Segel has a net worth of $50 million dollars, as of 2020.

A Freak And Geek

Segel was born in Los Angeles on January 18, 1980 the younger of two brothers. Standing tall at 6’4″, Segel was a natural on the basketball court and was even a college-bound player. His aspirations changed as he gravitated towards acting and he began performing in his local theater Palisades Playhouse.

His first break was in a small role as a watermelon-toting partygoer in Can’t Hardly Wait (1998). The film was promptly followed by dark comedy Dead Man on Campus (1998) where he met Linda Cardellini. The two began dating and went on to co-star in the NBC comedy series Freaks and Geeks. Despite a swift cancelation after the first season, the show developed a devoted cult following that has yet to be shaken.

Segel slipped back into obscurity for a few years, taking roles in lesser-known movies and guest starring in a few shows like CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and Alias. But by 2005, he regained his momentum after he joined the main cast of this hit CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother. The burgeoning popularity of the show helped launch Segel back onto the big screen and he was cast with Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd in the 2007 bromance Knocked Up.

Writing His Own Story

With a mind made for comedy, Segel wrote his first screenplay, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and took the lead role as a brokenhearted musician who tries to escape his breakup woes in Hawaii where his recent ex is coincidentally vacationing with her new boyfriend. Pummeling past the usual expectations of the genre, the romantic comedy was surprisingly hilarious, winning rave reviews from critics, which was due, in part, to the outstanding comedic cast that included Russell Brand, Bill Hader and Jonah Hill. The movie ended with a Dracula puppet rock opera, the puppets for which were designed by Hensen Studio geniuses. The new relationship with the puppet masters spawned a deal with Disney for Segel to take on The Muppets (2011) as its writer.

As Segel continued to dally in big screen comedies like I Love You, Man (2009) and Despicable Me (2010), he kept at writing (Get Him to the Greek) and, all the while, maintained his place on How I Met Your Mother. Bouncing around between projects has given Segel a chance to cultivate friendships amongst some of the funniest comedic contemporaries. And with his own impressive list of hilarious roles, Jason Segel earned his standing amongst the new generation of funny bone tappers.

Defining Quote “I miss smoking a ton of pot. I can’t do it anymore. I’ve got too much work.”
