Who Is Leighton Meester
Her real-life beginnings were a far cry from the silver spoon upbringing her Gossip Girl counterpart Blair Waldorf was born into. But Leighton’s turn as a spoiled, conniving trust fund baby took her a long way from her questionable background to a promising career both in front of a camera and behind a mic.
American actress Leighton Meester has a net worth of $5 million dollars, as of 2020.
Beginning Behind Bars
Like something out of a daytime soap opera, Leighton was born while her mother and father were serving federal prison sentences in Texas for drug smuggling. Her mother was excused to a halfway house to give birth, but newborn Leighton had to live with her grandmother while she waited for her parents to be released. Today, she maintains a very close relationship with her mother saying, “She’s an amazing woman.”
Leighton grew up in Florida where she began appearing in local theater productions before moving to New York with her mother when she was 11-years-old. Once in the city of dreams, Leighton enrolled at the Professional Children’s School and was signed by Wilhelmina modeling agency before booking jobs with Ralph Lauren and landing small roles on Law & Order.
With the makings of a Hollywood career on the fast track, Leighton picked up and moved to L.A. when she was 14 years old. She landed guest spots on shows like Veronica Mars, Entourage and House during her teen years, but high school was far from a cakewalk for the budding actress. She dropped out her junior year, with the support of her mother, because she was bullied, although she had already accumulated enough credits to graduate.
Leighton’s big break came in 2007 when she landed a lead role on the show that would seek to define a generation. Leighton scored the role of Blair Waldorf, the uptight Upper East Side saboteur on Gossip Girl. The show immediately made Leighton and her costars stars and style icons—and Leighton was their young Hollywood queen bee.
But her takeover wasn’t only on television. She began nabbing supporting roles in flicks like The Haunting of Sorority Row (2007), Date Night (2010) and Going the Distance (2010). But, much like Blair, Leighton was always looking for the next best thing. In 2009, Leighton landed a record deal with Universal Republic and debuted her first singles ‘Somebody to Love’ and ‘Your Love’s A Drug’ before collaborating with Cobra Starship for ‘Good Girls Go Bad.’
Still the reigning queen of upper Manhattan on Gossip Girl, Leighton decided to stake some territory in the country. Country Strong put her on the screen alongside Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow in a role that gave her another chance to show off her vocal prowess.
Like Blair Waldorf has all of Manhattan dangling by a string, Leighton does the same with the entertainment industry. She’s already cornered the music, television and movie industries—we’re holding our breath for when she comes out with her own fragrance.
Defining Quote “I watched a lot of TV, and it clicked one day that these people were acting. It sounded like the most fun thing ever.”
