Steaming up the small screen as Dr. Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd on ABC’s hit medical drama Grey’s Anatomy.

Who Is Patrick Dempsey

With his green eyes and boy next door charm, Patrick Dempsey has made a career as a romantic lead. The star might have earned the nickname “McDreamy” thanks to his turn on Grey’s Anatomy, but this heartthrob was slaying the ladies on the big screen long before he donned his surgical scrubs at Seattle Grace.

American actor Patrick Dempsey has a net worth of $60 million dollars, as of 2020.

Clowning Around

Patrick Galen Dempsey was born in Lewiston, Maine on January 13, 1966. Dempsey was diagnosed with dyslexia as a teenager, but his talents in acting, dance and juggling far outweighed his academic struggles. He aspired to go to clown college and dropped out of high school to pursue his dreams after tying for second in a national juggling competition.

Thankfully, Dempsey abandoned his juggling aspirations and made the switch to theater. He won the Talent America contest in 1981 and met an agent who landed him an audition for a San Francisco-based production of Torch Song Trilogy. He won the role and followed up with an international touring gig in Brighton Beach Memoirs.

From Teen Heartthrob To Where Are They Now

Dempsey’s good looks and natural talent were bound to hit the big screen eventually, and in 1985 he made his big debut in Heaven Help Us. He followed up with romantic leads in Loverboy and Can’t Buy Me Love, and even took home the 1988 Young Artist Award for the latter. Dempsey was already a teen heartthrob at this point, but decided to break away from that image when he started to take on more serious roles in the early ’90s. He played a gangster in Mobsters and a runaway in Run, and even starred as John F. Kennedy in the ABC miniseries JFK: Reckless Youth.

Unfortunately for Dempsey, his fans were much more interested in his rom-com roles than his serious dramas, and he fell off the radar in the mid to late 90’s. He appeared in a string of TV movies and nabbed some supporting big-screen roles, but Dempsey came dangerously close to becoming a has-been. The early 2000s brought a bit more luck, as Dempsey landed a role in Scream 3 and memorable guest starring gigs on Will & Grace and Once and Again, for which he earned an Emmy nomination. Dempsey’s good looks were only ripening with age, and he soon found himself back in the romantic comedy circuit when he wooed Reese Witherspoon in Sweet Home Alabama.

Anatomical Success

Dempsey’s second big break came in 2005 when Shonda Rhimes made him the romantic lead in Grey’s Anatomy. He also auditioned for the lead role in House, but probably wouldn’t have earned the nickname McDreamy if he’d taken that role instead. Grey’s has been a smash hit ever since, and Dempsey nabbed Golden Globe and SAG nominations for his portrayal of Dr. Derek Shepherd.

Dempsey’s Grey’s success has also led to a return to the big screen—he romanced Amy Adams in Enchanted and Michelle Monaghan in Made of Honor. He appeared in the second sequel to Transformers in 2011 and has appeared as the spokesperson for L’Oreal and the voice of State Farm. He even created his own cologne so that women everywhere can have their man smell like McDreamy.

Peaceful Marriage And War On Set

Dempsey has been happily married to his wife, makeup artist Jillian Frank, since 1999. The couple have three children together and stay out of the tabloids, but Dempsey’s romantic life wasn’t always so peaceful. In 1987, the then-21-year-old Dempsey married his 48-year-old manager, Rocky Parker. The couple co-directed a family film called Ava’s Magical Adventure, but the film flopped, and so did their marriage in 1994.

In 2006, the typically peaceful Dempsey shocked his fans when he was involved in a scuffle with former co-star Isaiah Washington on the set of Grey’s Anatomy. Washington reportedly attacked Dempsey after McDreamy stood up for his other costar, T.R. Knight, when Knight showed up late to set. Washington used a homophobic slur against the closeted Knight, who was essentially forced to publicly come out after the incident. Dempsey ended up looking like the hero for defending his friend, and Washington soon left the show.
