Who Is Shakira

Her ‘Hips [certainly] Don’t Lie’ and neither do her record sales. From Shakira’s hometown of Columbia all the way to the U.S.A. and beyond, this ‘She Wolf’ isn’t afraid to devour any pop market that crosses her path.

Colombian singer Shakira has a net worth at $300 million dollars, as of 2020.

Coming From Colombia

Born in Barranquilla, Columbia to a Colombian father and Lebanese mother, it’s no surprise that Shakira’s mixed heritage gave way to her sexy, exotic looks. But her Lebanese and Colombian background did more than give her that beautiful face, it also exposed her to the music of both cultures and added to her American and English fixations with artists like Led Zeppelin, The Police and Nirvana.

The youngster was obsessed with the way that music represented culture and started writing her very own tunes when she was only eight years old. Shakira also began to learn the guitar and enter a variety of local talent shows. But one person who didn’t dig her strong and soulful chops? Her choir director kicked her out of the group for not being able to blend in with her choirmates’ voices—her voice was too strong. Unfazed, the 13-year-old moved to Bogotá in an attempt to land a modeling contract, but instead walked away with a Sony record deal.

Getting Dramatic

In 1991, when she was only 14, Shakira’s debut album, Magia (Magic), began to make waves within Columbia’s music circuit. But her second album, Peligro (Danger), failed to make the same impact. Rather than give it another go, Shakira traded her mic for a sound stage when she began to appear in El Oasis, a Colombian soap opera.

The following year, Shakira headed back to the studio, determined to take direction only from herself. The product was Pies Descalzos (Bare Feet) and featured a blending of the musical styles that inspired the artist—Arabic undertones melded with Latin beats and perfected by rock rhythms. The album was a hit in Columbia, Spain and in the U.S., but Americans got a real taste of the hip-shaking Latina when she released her 1998 album Donde Estan los Landrones? (Where Are The Thieves?) But in order to really crack the American market, Shakira realized she would have to learn English well enough to write original songs in the language.

As a musician struggling to crack the American market in 2000, Shakira met the former president of Argentina’s son, Antonio De La Rua. The two kept their quiet romance alive for a whopping 11 years before they announced they had separated in early 2011.

Getting Political

In 2001, the newly blonde Shakira released a taste of what was to come for her American fans with ‘Whenever, Wherever’. The lover’s anthem was an instant hit and her subsequent album, Laundry Service, debuted at number three on the charts before it went triple platinum. The poet/songwriter continued to write and soon had a collection of more than 60 tunes that were eventually whittled down to two albums—one English (Oral Fixation) and one Spanish (Fijacion Oral). The following year, Shakira found that she had a new hit on her hands but no new album for it. As a result, Oral Fixation was re-released with the Wyclef Jean collaboration ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ and the new addition became an instant club staple.

But not everything was Billboard charts and sold out tours for the songstress. In 2008 Shakira brought attention to a slew of kidnappings in Columbia and made public pleas for hostages to be released from the country. If anyone had the power to bring young people’s attention to a public issue it was Shakira. She was number four on Forbes’ female artist top earner’s list and scored a 10-year contract to tour with Live Nation—a deal that is rumored to be worth a figure in the range of $70 and $100 million.

In the fall of 2009 Shakira was at it again and released her sixth studio album, She Wolf. And a She Wolf she was—Shakira devoured the Billboard charts and everyone in countries from Russia to Argentina to the U.S.A. were dying to get their hands on the new album. The album’s eponymous single as well as hip shaking hits like‘Did It Again’ and ‘Give It Up to Me’ dominated the U.S. pop circuit. Just over a year later Shakira released her seventh studio album, Sale el Sol, which generated the Spanish belly dancing hit, ‘Loca.’

Her hypnotic hip-shaking and danceable beats have been enough to distract fans from her oft nonsensical warbling and propel this Colombian diva to a megastar. Overcoming language barriers and cultural barriers, Shakira has proven that she’s earned a permanent place in American pop culture.

Defining Quote “I wanna stay an eternal girlfriend. I want to have my boyfriend’s children, but I don’t think we need a piece of paper to regulate the game and we don’t have to go through the whole stress of a wedding and suffering to throw a good party.”
