Who Is Shy Glizzy
Shy Glizzy, born Marquis Amonte King, is a rapper from Washington. Though Glizzy never intended to become a rapper and never even listened to rap music when he was younger, he learned he had a gift for the medium when he was writing a book that inadvertently turned in to his first song. Having grown up as a Muslim, reading the Quran, and reading countless newspapers and biographies led to Glizzy becoming somewhat of a story teller himself. The rapper has low-key become the enfant terrible of rap music, as the gifted rapper is continuously getting in to trouble but at the same time getting nominated for Grammy Awards.
American rapper Shy Glizzy has a net worth of about $250 thousand dollars, as of 2020.
How Did Shy Glizzy Get So Rich?
Though the rapper had been grafting and putting out mixtapes for seven years up to this point, it wasn’t until 2018 when Shy Glizzy released his debut record, Fully Loaded. This time Glizzy wasn’t holding back any punches, as he recruited some of the biggest names in rap, such as Lil Uzi Vert, Gunna, Rick Ross, and again, Young Thug. The album was the biggest success in Glizzy’s career to date as it reached number 35 on the Billboard 200 album chart and sold over 14,000 copies, including album-equivalent units streamed on services such as Spotify and Tidal.
On top of his own charting tracks, Glizzy also makes thousands featuring on other rappers’ tracks and works well with the record breaking Lil Uzi Vert, most recently working together on the newly released single “Right or Wrong”. Glizzy also tour across the whole of North America, opening for Gunna on the 2018 Drip or Drown 2 tour.
Why Is He So Famous?
The rapper first appeared on the scene after releasing his first mixtape way back in 2011, No Brainer, when Glizzy was just 18 years old. From that point on, Glizzy continued to spit out mixtape after mixtape to huge amounts of fanfare in the Washington areas, especially with Streets Hottest Youngin, Law, and Fly Money. Critics were calling for major labels to sign Glizzy years before he ever was. Complex were calling for this back in 2012, and in 2013 when the rapper was still unsigned, the website called for it again when he was playing at SXSW. Then website magazine Fact got on board when they called for people to take notice of the rapper in 2014.
Though they weren’t the huge stars that they have since become, Glizzy’s sixth mixtape featured the now superstar rap crew Migos, and it also featured Gotti and Kevin Gates. However, it was 2014 that was Glizzy’s biggest year up to that point, as at the beginning of the year he celebrated the release of his seventh mixtape in three years with Young Jefe. What stood out about this record and why it was so different to his past releases was that it featured much higher profile guest spots than he’d ever had, including a guest verse from the chart topping rapper, Young Thug.
Without a shadow of a doubt, Glizzy’s biggest single of his career is the remix of “Awwsome”, which featured A$AP Rocky and 2 Chainz. The hit song was streamed more than 750,000 times on Soundcloud within one week and it peaked at number 45 on the Billboard R&B and Hip Hop songs chart.
What Makes Him So Successful?
Unlike many similarly sounding rappers who record countless trap rap mixtapes, Glizzy has a unique sound that he claims can be attributed to what he was listening to when he grew up. Instead of listening to rap music, the musician listened to Go-Go music. The rapper is one of the original artists to popularise the “DMV” rap flow and introduce it in to commercial music. “DMV” rap came to fruition in the DC area and is known for it’s whisper-like rap delivery set against a go-go music beat, which has become typically Glizzy.
Thanks to his unique sound and recording so much music that he saturated the Washington DC rap scene, Shy Glizzy has earned a modest net worth of $200,000. Though his more popular partners in crime, such as Lil Uzi Vert and Young Thug, who commonly feature on his tracks have arguably catapulted Glizzy’s career tenfold. It’s likely that Glizzy’s brand will expand and following the newly released track with Lil Uzi, a new Shy Glizzy project is definitely imminent.
