Who Is Winona Ryder

All it took was one sticky finger slip-up to send Winona Ryder’s once promising career into a tailspin. But even with a felony on her résumé, it can’t (although the tabloids seem to think it can) discount her performances in a long list of film sensations.

American actress Winona Ryder has a net worth of $18 million dollars, as of 2020.

Coming From The Commune

Born in Minnesota to writer parents, Winona was introduced to her parents’ highbrow lifestyle and made routine visits to family friends like Allen Ginsberg. The family picked up their highly academic lifestyle and moved to Elk, California when Winona was seven years old where they joined a commune and lived with seven other families.

The commune focused on the self through academic betterment and forbade outer influences like television. But Winona’s mother let her daughter watch classic movies, which planted the acting seed in the youngster. But the commune was more than just a communal place for families to raise children—Winona recalls that the commune members were often in the nude and they had no running water or electricity.

The Scholar

After three years, the family had enough and moved to a suburb of San Francisco where Winona would attend high school. But her first days at school were no cakewalk—Winona was beat up by a group of classmates because they thought she was a feminine boy. She quickly switched schools and was enrolled at the American Conservatory Theater where she studied acting and began performing in small-scale productions.

Things were looking up for the 13-year-old aspiring actress when a talent scout who helped to cast her in her first feature film, Lucas, discovered her. Things picked up from there when young Winona won a lead role in the 1990 cult hit Beetlejuice before going on to star in Edward Scissorhands (1990) and Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992). Winona was slowly becoming a household name and was known for her darkly tinged roles. But the actress shook things up when she was cast in the classic Little Women (1994), in which she played Jo.

Scissorlove

But it wasn’t only Winona’s acting career that was heating up. When she was 18 years old she met Johnny Depp at a movie premiere and the two immediately hit it off. The couple went on to co-star in the wildly successful Edward Scissorhands before getting engaged in 1990. The two sustained a three-year engagement before they called it quits.

Winona went on to land a slew of heavy acting roles in films like The Crucible (1996) opposite Daniel Day-Lewis, Woody Allen’s Celebrity (1998) and Girl, Interrupted (2000) opposite Angelina Jolie.

Sticky Fingers

But in 2001, scandal, not starring roles, emerged as the forefront of her image. While shopping at a Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills, Winona was caught on camera shoplifting more than $5,000 worth of designers goods. She was sentenced to three years of probation, full compensation for the items, more than $3,000 in fines and 480 hours of community service. But the judge overseeing the case didn’t think that the incident was merely a case of “I gotta have it.” Winona was also sentenced to attend psychological therapy sessions and drug counseling. With her first felony under her belt, Winona understandably withdrew from the spotlight to focus on her recovery.

The Comeback Kid

She made her comeback appearance in the 2002 Adam Sandler comedy Mr. Deeds (for which she was nominated for a worst actress Razzie Award) before appearing in A Scanner Darkly (2006), The Private Lives of Pippa Lee (2009) and Black Swan (2010).

Although it has been difficult for Winona to step away from the black mark of her past, the eccentric actress, who admits she never uses the Internet, is still an onscreen sensation whose work speaks for itself.

Defining Quote “I never really modeled myself on anyone. I was inspired by lots of people, certainly in acting and writing and stuff, but I never wanted to be somebody else.”
